HOUSEHOLD VIEW

Connect the portfolio to the rest of the financial picture.

Cash flow, reserves, taxes, insurance, account structure, debt, and time horizon all change how much investment risk a household can reasonably carry.

PLANNING SYSTEM

Connect the balance sheet, cash flow, accounts, protection, and portfolio

A financial plan is not a collection of account balances. It is a set of linked decisions about what the household owns and owes, how cash moves, which risks are retained or transferred, and which assets support each future obligation.

Planning layerCore question
Household balance sheetWhat assets, debts, ownership structures, and contingent obligations exist?
Cash flowWhat is reliably available after taxes, benefits, required spending, and debt service?
ProtectionWhich events could force borrowing, asset sales, or a permanent change in the goal?
Accounts & taxWhich wrapper fits the purpose, access need, and tax treatment of the money?
PortfolioWhat return and risk exposure is appropriate after the other layers are known?
REVIEW & APPLY

Check your understanding

01What goal and spending date is the portfolio supporting?
02Which account, tax, insurance, or estate constraint changes the decision?
03What life event or date should trigger the next review?

Connect every investment decision to a household purpose

A portfolio is one component of a financial plan. The plan also includes cash flow, debt, taxes, insurance, account structure, beneficiaries, education goals, and retirement spending. These areas interact: a new mortgage changes savings capacity, a job change changes benefits, and a family event can alter beneficiaries and insurance needs.

The most useful planning dashboard therefore focuses on dependencies rather than products. For each major goal, identify the amount, date, funding source, account, investment approach, liquidity requirement, and risk that could interrupt the plan. Review the dashboard when life changes, not only when markets move.

  • Give every account a stated job.
  • Keep short-horizon money separate from long-horizon market risk.
  • Use life events as automatic triggers to review protection, beneficiaries, taxes, and allocations.
